Empowering Green Energy Saving Transformations in Star-Rated Hotels

24 Jun, 2025

With the introduction of "Dual Carbon" goals, the hotel industry in China has witnessed a wave of green transformation. Many prestigious hotels are undertaking energy-saving renovations customized to their unique characteristics, and the Jing An Shangri-La Hotel in Shanghai is one such example. The Jing An Shangri-La Hotel officially began operations in 2013. After ten years of service, its hot water system required an upgrade to improve energy efficiency to make sure that the guests continue to enjoy the same high-quality accommodation experience while improving the hotel's green and low-carbon performance.

To address the needs of the Jing An Shangri-La Hotel, Grundfos collaborated with professional energy-saving service partners to conduct a detailed energy consumption diagnosis. Together, they studied energy optimization and energy-saving, and emission reduction solutions, ultimately helping the hotel achieve a complete upgrade of its domestic hot water and air conditioning heating systems. This initiative by Grundfos played a key role in advancing the hotel's green transformation. Also, Grundfos didn't forget to ensure that the solution would go with broader sustainability efforts, which usually include systems such as sewage treatment plants and industrial wastewater treatment used in larger facility environments.

The Challenges Faced

For hotels, especially the fancy ones, saving energy isn’t as simple as just installing new gear. It’s all about making those upgrades without guests even realizing anything’s happening. Since hotels are always open and focused on giving people a comfortable, seamless experience, any kind of renovation has to be super thoughtful and low-key. The real challenge is pulling off the upgrades without getting in the way of daily operations and making sure that after all the work is done, things aren’t just more energy-efficient, but just as comfortable, if not more, for the people staying there.

Before the renovation of the hotel, it used traditional steam boilers for heating water but they were very noisy, energy-consuming and difficult to maintain. Problems like steam loss and tricky condensate recovery made things even worse. This outdated approach is quite common in older facilities and underscores the need for holistic upgrades that include efficient water treatment solutions when improving infrastructure.

Renovating the system came with a lot of challenges because the hotel had to stay fully operational the entire time. The construction team had to work quickly and efficiently, all while dealing with limited spaces and limited access across different areas of the building. Balancing a tight schedule with crowded installation areas made the whole project difficult. Upgrading urban luxury hotels often means balancing between the plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems while keeping an eye on local sewage treatment plant connections and regulations.

The Solution Grundfos Provided

Partnering with Strategic Allies to Deliver Customized Innovative Solutions for the Hotel

In this project, Grundfos collaborated with an energy-saving service partner specializing in energy management for high-end hotels to provide a tailored, efficient water distribution solution and a flexible business cooperation model. The energy-saving service company handled the overall design, coordination, and implementation of the renovation plan, while Grundfos improved the solution with its high-efficiency and intelligent pump skids. Together, they helped the hotel to quickly recover renovation costs through system, service, and operational energy savings. This maximized the hotel's green transformation.

Most importantly, Grundfos always approaches projects like these with broader environmental awareness. This specific project was centered around heating and cooling upgrades. The same technology and design philosophy applies to larger infrastructure improvements, such as industrial wastewater treatment. In those cases, we may need precise fluid handling and system automation to ensure both environmental compliance and cost-efficiency.

Compact, Convenient, and Advanced Hydraulic Modules

This renovation project replaced the original steam boiler system with air-source heat pumps and water-source heat pumps as the new heat sources. The majority of the circulators in air-source heat pump skids must be installed outdoors, as is the case with most of the pump skids. Traditional outdoor pumps have so many problems, like insufficient protection, corrosion susceptibility, quick aging, limited lifespans, and high failure rates. Also, it can be expensive and challenging to place electrical equipment such as control cabinets and power distribution.

Grundfos' integrated intelligent pump skids perfectly address these issues:

  • The pump skids are equipped with a protective cover that is windproof, rainproof, and corrosion-resistant, with a compact structure for easy installation.
  • The pump skids include Grundfos' E-pumps, which combine the pump, VFD, and controller into one module. This design requires a single power supply only and considerably reduces electrical and control costs for the water distribution system.
  • The modules offer high cost-performance, low overall costs, and excellent energy-saving performance.

These kinds of advanced modules are perfect for retrofits and can be part of broader water treatment solutions where distribution, flow control, and energy optimization are crucial. Whether it's pumping clean water for domestic use or managing flow within a sewage treatment plant, Grundfos’ modular systems offer scalable advantages.

Quiet, Efficient and Intelligent E-Pumps

In this project, the water-source heat pump skids not only serve as the heat source for domestic hot water and heating but also produce cold water to supplement the air conditioning system. These pump skids are installed on various equipment floors, and the circulators that come with it are required to have low noise levels, minimal vibration, and high energy efficiency. The superior performance of Grundfos’ E-pump has earned recognition from the customer:

  • Quiet operation with minimal vibration, equipped with IE5 permanent magnet VFD motors for high energy efficiency.
  • The necessity for a separate pump control cabinet is eliminated with integrated equipment that combines the pump, VFD, and controller. The system can be directly combined into the customer's BMS and cloud platform through communication modes, reducing overall costs.
  • The prefabricated E-pump system enables swift on-site installation, reducing construction time and conserving space. This approach effectively minimizes disruptions to the hotel's regular operations during renovations.

The use of quiet and efficient systems is especially relevant when designing systems for industrial wastewater treatment, where reliable and low-maintenance equipment can lead to considerable operational improvements.

How The Innovative System Solution Helped The Hotel

The Jing An Shangri-La Hotel in Shanghai is making great strides toward going greener, thanks to Grundfos’ smart and energy-saving pump systems. By replacing its old setup with Grundfos’ intelligent E-pump, the hotel has boosted its energy efficiency by over 15%, which means it’s not only cutting down on energy use but also saving a lot in the long run.

Grundfos has been leading the way in sustainable water and pump solutions for years. They're all about helping businesses upgrade in a way that’s good for the planet. The company’s innovations are not just limited to hotels and residential buildings; they extend to industries looking for trustworthy water treatment solutions, including sewage treatment plants and industrial wastewater treatment systems where efficiency, durability, and smart monitoring are essential.

Looking ahead, Grundfos plans to team up even more with partners across the industry to keep driving green innovation and help more companies stay ahead in the move toward sustainability. Whether it's enhancing the guest experience in a luxury hotel or optimizing the flow in a large-scale wastewater system, Grundfos continues to make its mark as a global leader in intelligent, energy-efficient pumping technologies.
