High-Efficiency Grundfos Pumps for Sustainable IT Infrastructure
Project Overview
A major Indian IT player was working on building a new greenfield campus focusing on energy efficiency, sustainability and advanced building services.
The pumping systems for the new campus had to offer more than just reliable performance; they had to show real lifecycle energy and cost benefits, as sustainability is a core element of the organisation’s corporate values.
In search of a superior pumping solution, the project team aimed to exceed traditional systems and set a new standard for the company’s future facilities.
The Challenge
The design consultant invited major OEMs to submit detailed proposals, including lifecycle cost analysis and projected energy performance for the new campus.
The pumping solution had to be:
- Support sustainability objectives for campus
- Offer high energy efficiency across different operating conditions
- Provide continuous flow of HVAC water
- Reduce the lifecycle operating costs
- Integrate seamlessly with the building's HVAC system
- Provide quantifiable energy savings compared to alternative solutions
The Grundfos Solution
Together with the design consultant and the end user, Grundfos proposed a highly efficient pumping solution based on TPE vertical inline pumps with IE5 permanentmagnet motors.
The solution was specifically engineered to meet the customer’s sustainability requirements and the operating characteristics of a variable-primary HVAC system.
The IE5 motor technology offered improved efficiency, particularly at part-load operating conditions, contributing to a reduction of energy consumption in comparison to competing alternatives.
Key Solution
Vertical inline pumps TPE from Grundfos with IE5 motor
The proposed system was tested through an energy impact analysis. The project assessment estimated the Grundfos solution would have about 64,240 kWh/year less energy consumption than the next-best alternative.
Project Outcome
The project successfully showed the potential of high efficiency pumping technology to support large scale sustainable building infrastructure.
Significant Energy Savings
The proposed Grundfos pumping system was estimated to use 64,240 kWh/year less energy than the next-best alternative solution.
Improved Part-Load Efficiency
The IE5 permanent-magnet motors showed excellent efficiency performance under varying loads, an important advantage for variable-primary HVAC applications.
Lifecycle-Focused Design
The project analyzed pumping solutions considering not only the first equipment selection but also the lifecycle energy consumption and operating costs, leading to a more sustainable investment decision.
Benchmark Project
The successful implementation showed the capabilities of the solution and achieved the savings projected at the time of sales.
The project then became a benchmark project for the IT major, demonstrating how highefficiency pumping technology can help achieve sustainable campus development.
