Anaerobic Reactor Wastewater Treatment
Anaerobic reactor wastewater treatment is a proven and energy-efficient method for treating industrial wastewater. It uses anaerobic bacteria (biomass) to convert organic pollutants or COD (chemical oxygen demand) into biogas in an oxygen-free environment. These anaerobic microorganisms are selected for their ability to degrade organic matter in industrial effluents, converting pollutants into biogas (methane + carbon dioxide) and a small amount of biosolids. The energy-rich biogas can then be used for boiler feed and/or combined heat and power (CHP) to produce ‘green’ electricity and heat.
How Anaerobic Reactor Wastewater Treatment Works:
- Anaerobic Digestion: In the absence of oxygen, specialized anaerobic microorganisms decompose organic matter found in wastewater. This process converts chemical oxygen demand (COD) into biogas, which is primarily methane and carbon dioxide, and generates a smaller amount of biosolids.
- Biogas Utilization: The biogas produced during anaerobic digestion is energy-rich and can be used for generating electricity and heat through combined heat and power (CHP) systems, or as a fuel for boilers. This recovery of energy helps make the process more sustainable and cost-effective.
Benefits:
- Low Energy Consumption: Anaerobic digestion requires significantly less energy compared to aerobic treatment methods.
- Compact Footprint: The system’s small reactor surface area makes it suitable for facilities with space constraints.
- Reduced Chemical Needs: Lower dependence on additional chemicals simplifies operations and reduces costs.
- Cost Savings on Sludge Handling: Generates less sludge than other methods, which cuts down on sludge handling and disposal expenses.
Post-Treatment:
- Aerobic Treatment: To further improve water quality and ensure it meets environmental discharge standards, anaerobic digestion is often followed by aerobic treatment. This step helps achieve high-quality effluent suitable for release into natural water bodies.
Anaerobic digester systems offer a robust and efficient solution for treating industrial wastewater, with the added benefits of energy recovery and lower operational costs.
