Building Sustainable Hospitality Through Intelligent Sewage Treatment

Overview

Water sustainability is becoming a critical operational priority for the hospitality sector, particularly in regions where freshwater resources are limited and demand continues to grow. A leading luxury hotel in Zanzibar sought a wastewater treatment solution that would not only meet environmental compliance requirements but also support its long-term sustainability objectives. The goal was to reduce freshwater consumption by reusing treated wastewater for landscape irrigation while maintaining reliable plant performance under varying occupancy conditions. To achieve this, the hotel partnered with Alantech to design and implement a customised sewage treatment system capable of converting wastewater into a reusable resource.

The Challenge

Large hospitality facilities generate significant volumes of wastewater from guest accommodations, restaurants, kitchens, laundry services, recreational facilities, and other daily operations.

For this project, the hotel management identified several key objectives:

  • Reduce dependence on freshwater sources for irrigation.
  • Minimise wastewater discharge to the environment.
  • Support sustainability initiatives across the property.
  • Generate treated water suitable for landscape and garden irrigation.
  • Ensure consistent performance despite seasonal fluctuations in occupancy.
  • Maintain ease of operation and minimise routine maintenance requirements.

The Solution

Alantech designed and supplied a 200 KLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) engineered specifically for the property's wastewater generation patterns and reuse requirements.

The system was designed to:

  • Treat up to 200,000 litres of sewage per day.
  • Produce treated water suitable for landscape irrigation.
  • Maintain stable treatment efficiency under varying hydraulic loads.
  • Support long-term operational reliability.
  • Reduce the hotel's freshwater demand for non-potable applications.

From equipment selection to system integration, the project was planned with a strong focus on operational simplicity, maintainability, and sustainable water management.

Results & Impact

Converting Wastewater into a Valuable Resource

Instead of disposing treated effluent, the hotel now reuses the treated water for irrigation of landscaped areas throughout the property.

Water Reuse Achieved

Daily Reuse Capacity:

200,000 Litres

Monthly Reuse Potential:

6 million Litres

Annual Freshwater Conservation:

73 million Litres

Why Alantech

At Alantech, we design water and wastewater treatment systems around actual operational requirements rather than standardised solutions.

Our engineering approach considers:

  • Site-specific conditions
  • Influent water characteristics
  • Intended reuse application
  • Operational and maintenance requirements
  • Future expansion possibilities

Beyond treatment, our focus is on helping organisations maximise water recovery, improve resource efficiency, and build long-term sustainability into their operations.
