Automating Water Transfer for a Prominent tea Plantation with a Custom Alantech–Grundfos Pumping Solution
A leading tea plantation group with expansive hillside estates, relies heavily on efficient water distribution to maintain healthy crop growth. Their irrigation system requires water to be transferred from a reservoir at the foothill to storage tanks located at the hilltop, ensuring timely and consistent watering across the plantation.
The Challenge
Previously, water was transported manually using a heavy vehicle to climb the hill, a process that required two operators—one at the ground level driving and another at the hilltop guiding coordination. This method consumed a large amount of fuel, demanded significant manpower, incurred high operational and maintenance expenses, and resulted in slow and delayed irrigation cycles. Managing daily watering requirements was difficult and inefficient, negatively affecting plantation productivity.
The Alantech Solution
To address these limitations, the Plantation collaborated with Alantech to engineer a fully automated water transfer solution. Alantech designed and implemented a customized pumping system optimized for the steep terrain and high lift requirements. The existing 50 HP arrangement was replaced with a far more efficient Grundfos pumping configuration, enabling the system to deliver the required performance with considerably reduced energy usage. The pumping system was integrated directly on-site, ensuring seamless connection with the existing infrastructure and enabling uninterrupted operation.
Transformative Energy Savings
The new automated system delivered significant improvements in energy efficiency:
• Initial consumption reduced from 37 kW/hour to 30 kW/hour using two pumps
• Further optimized to 22 kW/hour with improved system performance • Achieved 11 kW/hour using a single pump, nearly a 50% reduction • In additional cycles, optimized to 15 kW/hour with a single pump
Overall, energy consumption dropped from 37 kW/hour to as low as 11 kW/hour, resulting in nearly 70% reduction in energy costs.
Results and Outcomes
The automated pumping solution delivered substantial benefits. Energy consumption dropped dramatically, resulting in large recurring savings and improved sustainability. The need for multiple operators was completely eliminated, removing dependency on manual labour and vehicle-based water transport. Irrigation cycles became significantly faster, ensuring timely and uniform watering across the estate. A major reduction in fuel usage and vehicle maintenance costs further strengthened the financial advantages of the solution. Most importantly, water distribution became consistent and reliable, directly enhancing plantation performance and supporting healthier crop growth.
A Successful Transformation
Through intelligent engineering and high-efficiency Grundfos pumping technology, Alantech transformed a labour-intensive, costly, and time consuming process into a smart, automated solution that delivers consistent performance with minimal operational effort. The project stands as a powerful example of how innovative automation can drive energy efficiency, cost reduction, and agricultural productivity simultaneously.
