The Challenge

Data centers are growing quickly due to cloud computing, IoT, e-commerce, and telecommuting. The UAE, which is strategically positioned and well-equipped in infrastructure, has emerged as a leading destination for setting up data centers. Yet, ensuring energy efficiency within such settings is always tough.

Our client was facing a substantial problem while building a data center in the area. Air-cooled chillers were used at the center; however, optimizing their efficiency, along with minimizing PUE, became problematic. Cooling is extremely important not just for efficiency but also for sustainability.

The situation became even more complicated by the need for installation of HVAC circulation pumps on the roof, which had to withstand extremely high temperatures around 50°C, alongside the limited area for their installation. The system demanded an economical design, which was not only compact but also highly resistant to adverse weather conditions.

Also, the system relied heavily on water circulation for cooling purposes, making it necessary to have reliable water treatment equipment that would contribute towards ensuring that the system functions efficiently without hindrance. The use of such components in the system would ensure that it adheres to industrial requirements, similar to waste water treatment systems in industries.

The Solution

In order to overcome these difficulties, the customer has installed an adiabatic chiller booster system to improve the heat exchange process at the evaporator coils. Within such an approach, booster systems have been used to ensure that the water supplied effectively reaches the circulating tank.

The hydro boosters provided with variable speed drives were installed to allow for dynamic changes according to load requirements. Such an approach ensures effective operation of the system and lower energy consumption.

The incorporation of IP55 rated motors in the Hydro MPC E and Hydro Multi E was important since they ensured reliable working of these systems despite very harsh temperature levels on roof tops. The reason why these types of motors were used is because they were durable and efficient to use in difficult conditions.

There is also a benefit in terms of intelligent system control features. This allows the system to stop or lower its activity during times when there is less need for cooling. In doing so, it saves a lot of power from being wasted unnecessarily while extending life expectancy of the equipment.

The use of water treatment components ensures reliability of the system, in the sense that water quality remains constant throughout the cooling process. It shows how effective waste water treatment systems are today because they incorporate efficient mechanisms for doing the work.

Lastly, it is easier to install and optimize the system when all the components come from a single vendor.

The Results

The project had the following tangible and effective outcomes:

  • Reduction in energy usage by up to 30% due to highly efficient booster units
  • Better heating, ventilation, and air conditioning performance owing to excellent IE4/IE5 motors
  • Synchronization with the building management system for effective monitoring
  • Improved operational visibility and reliability for facility management teams
  • Strong support for long-term sustainability and carbon reduction goals

Conclusion

The project clearly illustrates that by incorporating smart pump technology along with efficient cooling techniques, one can dramatically enhance the operation of the data center in harsh environments. The client was able to benefit from the system not only because of energy efficiency but also because of its reliable operation.

From this case study, it is evident that having a suitable technology partner is crucial for the implementation of such projects. Grundfos, being an experienced company, provided an optimal solution for the needs of the modern data center industry.
