Saving Operational Costs with Distributed Pumping at Ngee Ann Polytechnic
The Challenge
The modern mixed-use facility, with a cafeteria, sports hall, student lounges and office spaces, is located at Block 22, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The building is a Green Mark Platinum Building with about 6000 m² of cooling area.
However, HVAC systems represented nearly 60% of the total energy consumption, so efficiency was a main concern. The current chilled water system was designed for a constant load profile with traditional fixed differential pressure control, resulting in:
- Too much pumping and energy consumption
- Inadequate flow distribution through the building
- Lower overall system performance
The Solution
Together with the Environmental & Water Technology Centre of Innovation, Grundfos has developed a Distributed Pumping solution.
The system consisted of:
- 15 MAGNA3 circulator pumps
- 4 TPE3 main pumps
Intelligent integration with Building Management System (BMS)
These smart pumps adjust flow based on actual cooling load needs, eliminating the need for traditional control valves and ensuring accurate system balancing.
The Outcome
The results yielded immediate and tangible benefits:
- Reduce the pump energy from 9.4 to 4.3 kW
- 54 percent energy savings total
- As Delta T increased by 28%, cooling became more efficient
- Every zone offers the same level of comfort
- Improved performance exceeding Green Mark Platinum standards
Key Takeaway
By shifting from conventional systems to smart distributed pumping, Ngee Ann Polytechnic significantly reduced operational costs while improving system efficiency and sustainability.
