Grundfos: Innovative Solutions for Wastewater Management

20 Feb, 2025

Efficient wastewater management is essential for urban infrastructure, particularly as cities grow and environmental standards become more stringent. Grundfos, a global leader in advanced pump solutions, has continually pushed the boundaries of innovation to meet these evolving needs. One such example is their contribution to optimizing wastewater pumping stations, where the focus on energy efficiency and clog-free operations plays a pivotal role.

The Challenge: Clogging and Energy Consumption

In many wastewater treatment plants, the challenge of clogging is a persistent issue. Pumps handling wastewater often face interruptions due to increasing levels of solids, leading to downtime and manual labor for unclogging. Energy consumption also becomes a concern, especially when using high-power pumps that consume significant electricity without offering proportional improvements in flow rate or efficiency.

These issues were particularly evident at a wastewater pumping station located in Finland. The station had been using a 75 kW pump to transport water to a treatment facility but faced regular clogging due to the high volume of solids in the wastewater. This frequent maintenance consumed both time and resources, making the process inefficient.

Grundfos’ Solution: The SE Pump with Open S-tube® Impeller

Grundfos introduced an innovative solution with their SE range of wastewater pumps, equipped with the Open S-tube® impeller. This advanced impeller design prevents clogging by ensuring that sediment and solids do not accumulate inside the pump. The semi-open impeller blades work in tandem with an adjustable suction cover, which is designed with a spin-out groove. This feature moves fibres and debris away from the pump, ensuring a smooth flow and continuous operation.

To address the high energy consumption, Grundfos replaced the existing 75 kW pump with a more efficient 63 kW pump. Despite its lower power rating, the new pump was able to maintain the same flow rate, thanks to its optimized design, while consuming significantly less energy.

The Results: Improved Efficiency and Sustainability

The results of Grundfos’ intervention were immediate and impressive. The new 63 kW pump eliminated clogging issues entirely, reducing the need for manual maintenance. This not only improved the efficiency of the wastewater pumping station but also reduced energy consumption by approximately 30,000 kWh per year.

By leveraging the self-cleaning capabilities of the Open S-tube® impeller, the station was able to operate continuously without interruptions caused by blockages. Additionally, the reduction in energy use translated into significant cost savings, contributing to a more sustainable operation.

A Future-Ready Solution

Grundfos’ approach to wastewater management exemplifies how innovation in pump technology can address common operational challenges while promoting sustainability. The success of the SE pump with Open S-tube® impeller in preventing clogging and reducing energy use highlights Grundfos' commitment to delivering solutions that meet the needs of modern infrastructure while minimizing environmental impact.

With such advancements, Grundfos continues to lead the way in creating smarter, cleaner, and more energy-efficient systems for wastewater management, ensuring that communities can handle growing demands without compromising on efficiency or environmental standards.
