Dubai Buildings Unlock Up to 80% Energy Savings with Grundfos Pumps

Aug 02, 2024

The buildings in Dubai are mostly glass and the regions are mostly sunny. They face unique challenges when it comes to energy efficiency. Over 364 days a year with sunshine and soaring temperatures, the energy demands of the city are substantial, especially for air conditioning systems that run continuously to keep interiors cool. In this energy-guzzling setting, however, there are very interesting innovative solutions that are cropping up, holding a promise for large energy savings and operational efficiency improvements for buildings across the city. Let's explore how buildings can unlock up to 80% energy savings with Grundfos Pumps in Dubai.

Dubai Ambitious Energy Efficiency Goals

Ambitious targets by the Dubai government to retrofit 30,000 buildings by 2030 could help slash the city's energy demand by 30%. It is part of the bigger efforts taken by the UAE towards preserving energy and water resources. With technology advancing at breakneck speed, solutions that were out of grasp have made a turnaround, and today they are bringing massive energy savings to Dubai's horizon.

The Energy Challenge in Dubai Glass Buildings

The architectures with large glass frontages in Dubai, lets intense solar radiation pass through the buildings for almost the whole year. Earlier, when the energy was relatively inexpensive, many buildings were equipped with oversized pumps and inefficient HVAC systems. This not only led to excessive energy consumption but also posed challenges in maintaining optimal building conditions without incurring high operational costs.

Transforming Building Efficiency with Grundfos Pumps

In addressing these challenges, H&H Property Management and Development, owner of the Indigo Tower, sought a solution to reduce electricity costs and improve overall system reliability. Working with Taka Solutions, they identified inefficiencies in their HVAC pumping systems, including oversized pumps and poor system balancing.

Grundfos conducted an Energy Check and recommended upgrading to close-coupled, end suction pumps equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs), specifically, the intelligent Grundfos NB-E pumps. These Grundfos pumps were tailored to match exact flow requirements to the chillers, significantly improving efficiency by optimizing the Delta-T (temperature difference between supply and return chilled water) from a mere 1 degree Celsius to a more efficient 5 degrees Celsius.

Results: Enormous Energy Savings and Significant Operational Gains

The results were striking. The power consumption of pumps, before upgraded, would not go below 36 kW/h. In the case of the Indigo Tower, this figure was down to 7-10 kW/h. This meant a startling reduction of 81% of electricity usage. The efficiency gains extended beyond the pumps themselves, positively impacting the entire performance of the HVAC System.

The payback period for the investment in pump upgrades was only eight months. Falcon Tower (residential) and Green Tower (commercial) of H&H Property Management and Development also saw major reductions in pump electricity consumption by 46 percent and 57 percent, respectively, thereby contributing to overall energy savings in excess of 20-25 percent when factoring in improvements across chiller systems, ventilation, and lighting.

Scaling Up for a Sustainable Future

The success of these retrofits is the epitome of similar initiatives holding out great promise for Dubai. Retrofitting old, inefficient pumps with modern, energy-efficient solutions brings this city closer to the realization of its ambitious goals aimed at ensuring sustainable development by 2030 and aligning itself under global targets, such as the UN's SDGs on water and climate action (SDG6 and SDG13).

Conclusion

Grundfos pumps, enabled by advanced technologies such as variable frequency drives, are driving the transformation of building energy efficiency in Dubai. Strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, such as those implemented at Indigo Tower, demonstrate that large energy savings are not only achievable but also financially rewarding. As Dubai continues to establish itself as a global leader in innovation and sustainability, these building efficiency innovations set the stage for a resilient and environmentally responsible future.
